Will child support impact my monthly benefits?

Posted by: MRG on 5/30/2011

Q: If I file for child support, will child support affect mine and my daughters social security? He has not paid child support in over 7 years!

A: If you are receiving Disability Insurance Benefits (AKA SSD or SSDI), the child support income will not impact your eligibility for benefits. If your daughter's benefits are based upon your disability, you are receiving Disability Insurance Benefits; Supplemental Security Income does not have auxiliary benefits for family members. Therefore, her benefits would not be impacted either.

If you and your daughter are receiving Supplemental Security Income (AKA SSI), all income impacts your monthly benefits. If you are not certain of which benefit you are receiving, you can call your local SS office to inquire.
